| 2:10 I was out of the hospital but still on head drugs when my arm went numb and I had to see my second neurologist. I very calmly told the frat boy in a white lab coat that I couldn’t feel my arm. And then I told him that arms matter, that I typed a lot for my job that my primary doctor thought it might be carpal tunnel. (I didn’t say that she’d first called my shrink to see if she could believe me.) But he flipped through my whole chart until he came to a diagram of my cervix and then he said: “Have you ever been tied up during sex? Are you into S&M? Do you like it rough?” I stood up and started screaming. The nurse ran in and looked at me like I was crazy and I knew: my word wouldn’t count against his. So I ran. I ran. Before they could catch me and lock me up I was down the stairs and out the door. The sky was blue and I knew: I’d gotten away and that was all. |
